Introduction to Cypress

You've created a website for yourself or for a client, and how can you be sure that it will works? OK, at the time you were working on it, of course it was working; the search form, the contact form, the various links were all functional, but how can you be sure of this over time? Wouldn't it be useful to have a procedure that would allow you to run several so-called ‘functional’ tests to check that everything is still working? This could be part of the maintenance contract you offer your customer.

What tool should you use for this type of requirement?

Cypress is a front-end testing tool that empowers developers to automate functional tests directly within the browser. It enables actions like navigating web pages, interacting with elements, submitting forms, and asserting content or URL changes, streamlining end-to-end and integration testing.

In june 2024, I've written an article about a PHP functional test tool called Behat, let's see how to proceed with Cypress which is a Javascript tool.

Start lubuntu Desktop

During my summer holidays, I've watched this video: Full Ubuntu GUI in a Container Displayed on Windows (XServer) and, of course, I wanted to play with it.

The idea is to start a Lubuntu Desktop distribution as a Docker container. Lubuntu is a lightweight Ubuntu distribution designed to be more resource-efficient than the standard Ubuntu.

Using Docker and Windows X Server, we'll be able to play with Lubuntu just like any other containers i.e. play and drop without any impact on our ghost. Ideal for learning purposes then.

Docker - Run Graphical User Interfaces - Firefox, Chrome & GIMP

In my previous post, I've illustrated how to start Firefox or GIMP in a browser. This was the first part of this series about graphical user interfaces because, until very recently, I didn't know it was possible to run GUIs with Docker and that's just amazing.

GUI stands for Graphical User Interface

So, using Docker, we can start Firefox or GIMP or even ... Doom 2.

In this blog post, we'll create our own xeyes Docker image, then play with Firefox and Gimp.

Introduction to Behat

Also read my article about Cypress

At work, I'm part of a team of PHP developers where we work together to create a very large proprietary application with a web interface.

This application is developed using the Laravel framework and we use PHPUnit and Pest to run our unit tests.

However, in addition to the unit tests, we are also putting in place a tool that will simulate actions on our interface, such as accessing the login page, entering a login and password, simulating the click on the 'login' button, wait our main screen is displayed then, on the new page, assert a lot of things / do a lot of tasks.

It's a bit like asking a human to play out scenarios over and over again, every day, to make sure we haven't introduced any regressions in our latest developments, like a cool new feature whose code changes have broken a previous feature.

For this, we're using Behat. This is a PHP composer dependency you can add to your project (or a new one). The idea is to be able to write assertions in pure English (or French) like "I go to the ABC website then I click on the blog menu item and I should receive a list of blog items" or "In the search box, I type Docker then I click on the search button and I should receive articles having the Docker tags".

In this article, we'll learn more about Behat and how to use it for a first test.
